PhotoDerma SA is currently developing two products
based on its proprietary technology using photodynamic therapy that
are tested in clinical pilot trials.
1. Hair removal
The removal of unwanted hair is a very old
concern of mankind and corresponds today to a global multi-billion
US$ market. Although there exists numerous techniques for depilation,
none is entirely satisfying. PhotoDynamic Epilation (PDE) is a breaking
technique for removal of undesired hair based on PDT. It has several
advantages over current depilation methods, namely:
- Independency of hair and skin colour
- Suitability for fine, vellus hair
- No risk of severe side effects such as scars
- Suitability to treat large body surfaces
- Attractive price
The following graph shows the inhibition of regrowth of hair after mechanical epilation followed by PDT (red line) up to 16 months compared to non-treated zones (blue line). The points are average values of test spots on several volunteers.

The pictures below show one of the treated zones before and 8 months after PDD.

2. Acne treatment
Acne is a very frequent skin disorder leading
often to strong mental distress and can leave permanent scars in
the face. Acne products and services are consumed for several billion
US$ per year on a world-wide scale. Today, effective medications are
based essentially on isotretinoin and its derivatives as well as on antibiotics. Both
classes of medications are strongly controversial due to their side
effects. Photodynamic therapy offers a radically different approach
to manage this disease with very little side effects
